Berries are a vital source of food for countless birds and small mammals as they store up energy for winter months ahead. The berries which get eaten up are then spread far and wide across the landscape

From dark, glossy blackberries to tart, squishy sea buckthorn. Shrubs and trees provide a bounty for the rest of nature – and us!

However, you must be careful when picking berries. Many of them are highly toxic!

The bright-red ‘arils’ of the yew tree look tasty but hide a very poisonous dark seed inside. Never pick something which you are unsure of.
