Art-science

Art-science provides an effective mechanism for engaging a wider audience with science. But it goes beyond this; working with artists widens our viewpoint, and allows us to think in different and more creative ways about our research.

Science and art both attempt to explore and address some of the problems facing society. Habitat destruction, climate change and over-exploitation threaten the survival of many species and habitats. To understand and help prevent this, we all need to work together. If we bring together the expertise, skills and experience of a wide range of people, we can create more innovative and powerful solutions to these problems.

Our Science department collaborates with artists to produce work and exhibitions that have been shown in the Garden and internationally. Ceramics, sculptures, textiles, prints, photographs and musical compositions have all been created in response to our work. Exhibitions have been inspired by our DNA barcoding, our conserving Welsh plants projects, and our pollinator research.
