Middleton Estate

The National Botanic Garden of Wales was founded in the year 2000 to create a new botanic garden for the new millennium.

We are dedicated to the research and conservation of biodiversity, sustainability, lifelong learning and the enjoyment of our visitors.

The Botanic Garden is located on the site of the Middleton Estate and we have been exploring the history of this estate as part of our Regency Restoration Project.

Previous owners of the estate built their wealth from exploitative colonial activities, including slavery.

We have not done enough to tell that part of their story. We would like to apologise for this and will do everything we can to improve on this going forward.

We strive to be a Botanic Garden for all of the people of Wales and seek to actively engage with communities throughout Wales but we need to do much more and we welcome every opportunity to engage with organisations and individuals to make this process as inclusive as possible.

The Board of Trustees is currently recruiting new members to support the development of the organisation and would welcome applications from individuals who would widen the representation of under-represented communities in Wales on the Board.
