Viviparous Sheep’s Fescue

Festuca vivipara

Viviparous sheep’s fescue is a weird grass and is a common sight on the Snowdonia hills above 1,000 feet.

Small plantlets grow in place of the flowers, giving this grass a very distinctive appearance – there are no other grasses like this in Wales.

You can find it in the Cwm Idwal bed in the Conserving Welsh Plants display.
