June 30th, July 7th 2015 and July 8th: The last Tuesday of the month and another pollination day. This time the weather was quite warm though we still didn’t find many bees! But a big thanks to all who helped in this very interesting and potentially valuable project.
The following Tuesday the weather cleared up by the time we set off to collect the boat from the farm buildings at Waun Las, thanks to Huw who was waiting for us with his 4×4 and trailer. A bit of a detour in order to get the boat to Llyn Canol, then a discussion as to who would be the first to venture into the unknown before Keith and Chris finally set out. And the weeds weren’t as bad as feared so that once Chris had got the hang of the object in his hand – an oar – they made it to the log, only to become a bit stuck – the water was only about 18 inches deep. But eventually they made it back.
At this point we realised that we hadn’t really prepared ourselves very well. No equipment other than the boat! So Keith and John drove back to the Aqualab to collect nets and other bits and pieces.
This time Anne, Howard and John were the intrepid sailors and soon made their way out and began sampling. Once back on dry land we were all able to have a good look at the creatures that just a small water sample had produced. The boat was then pulled out of the water just before a heavy shower. But we all stayed dry under the ‘observation’ shelter.
The following day Deborah led a couple of Dragonfly walks. Despite the rather dull weather we saw most of the Dragon and Damsel Flies that there were to see. Very interesting, very informative and something well worth repeating.
