The National Botanic Garden of Wales successfully DNA barcoded all of the native Welsh flowering plant species. It would not have been possible without sponsorship by the people of Wales.
It’s not too late to get involved, sponsoring a DNA barcode will allow us continue our work on Barcode UK: our project to DNA barcode the rest of the UK flora. For just £25, pick a plant species to sponsor and be part of our exciting DNA barcoding projects. Each donation really does make a difference.
Sponsor a DNA barcode for £25
Choose the species that you would like to sponsor from our list Welsh native flowering plants. As a thank you for your donation, you will receive:
- A certificate showing the DNA barcode of your sponsored species.
- Your name will appear next to your chosen species on our website and on the Barcode of Life Database (if you would rather your name did not appear, just let us know).
How does your money get spent?
By sponsoring a barcode you are making a direct contribution to the ongoing costs of supporting DNA barcoding and its applications at the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Your money will pay for the costs of extracting DNA; amplifying and sequencing the DNA barcode genes.
It will also contribute to our research in developing DNA barcoding applications. Our current research on pollinators uses DNA barcoding to find out the plants that are most important to our honey bees and wild pollinators.
How can you purchase?
You will need to let us know the name of the plant species you would like to sponsor from this list, along with your name and address and the name that you would like to appear on your certificate.
To sponsor a DNA barcode by credit or debit card, telephone 01558 667168. If you wish to pay by cheque please send it to the Science Department, National Botanic Garden of Wales, Llanarthne, Carmarthenshire, SA32 8HG and make the cheque payable to the National Botanic Garden of Wales. If you are visiting the Garden, you can give in your sponsorship details and pay at the Botanic Garden’s Siop Botanica.
If more than one person chooses to support the same species all names will be linked to that species. The certificates with DNA barcodes that you will receive, represent our thank you for your donation and have no commercial value. Your details are required only for us to post certificates and will not be passed on to any third party.
