Meet the organisers of the art therapy workshop

Bruce Langridge

Hello, we are Jenny Robinson and Mandy Leonard, Trainee Art Therapists in our final year of an MA in Art Psychotherapy studying at The University of South Wales.

We are thrilled to be delivering a workshop – “What is Art Therapy?” as part of the National Botanic Garden’s Wellbeing Weekend on May 25-26th 2019.

The first thing to state is that no artistic ability is needed!

We will be offering you an opportunity to express yourself in a creative way whilst learning a little about Art Therapy.

Art, our first tool of exchange, pre-language, is used in Art Therapy as a vehicle for self-expression and symbolic communication.  Artwork is seen as a reflection or an extension of its creator and there is no right or wrong way to make use of the art materials.  In this session we will be using some traditional materials and some natural items kindly collected by the staff from the Gardens.

Between us, we have worked with adults in acute mental health settings; children and young adults on the autistic spectrum; people in palliative care; those who have been bereaved and have contributed to community wellbeing groups.

We are hoping that you will leave the session with a little knowledge about art therapy some insight, food for thought and a portable and private creation of your own making.

We look forward to welcoming you on Sunday the 26th May.
