Compost
Peat-free compost is fortunately widely available. Many garden centre chains offer their own brand, as well as other brands such as Westland New Horizon and Miracle-Gro. Just double-check that the bag states ‘peat-free’ and not ‘peat-reduced’ (‘peat-reduced’ still contains peat!).
We highly recommend these brands:
- Dalefoot – available online and at specialist nurseries including the Botanic Garden’s Y Pot Blodyn Garden Centre
- FertileFibre – available online
- Melcourt SylvaGrow – stocked by specialist nurseries
- Martin’s TLC – available in West Wales
- Pure coir for seed germination – available online bagged or as dry blocks
Compost made from the green waste collected by local councils is a great cost-effective way to fill pots or raised beds, or to use as a mulch – e.g. Merlin’s Magic in Carmarthenshire. It is often available from local authority recycling centres.
