The grounds of the National Botanic Garden of Wales have a history going back at least as far as Tudor times. But what we can see today is the impact made by William Paxton at the end of the eighteenth century – a country park with lakes, waterfalls and walkways – now lovingly restored.
Paxton was an enthusiastic sea-bather at Brighton. By 1802, having set in motion the development of this estate, Paxton saw an opportunity to turn Tenby into a resort, perhaps modelled upon Brighton, and he started to invest a lot of his fortune in developing that town, successfully, as this exhibition shows.
